Nantucket Art

Looking for an island destination that's rich in history and charm? Step on board the paddlewheeler Island Home for a journey to Nantucket and her colorful past. In this charming Nantucket art poster, Marie Fox has captured the island's history and coastal beauty.

Passing Brant Point Light, America's second oldest lighthouse, your steamer is greeted in the harbor by a rainbow fleet of colorful sailboats. From the wharves that once served whaleships, follow a cobblestone street past the white steepled church of 1809. A nearby house is topped with a ‘widow's walk' where both men and women kept watch over the harbor. Also featured in this historic Nantucket print is the island's unique mix of architectural styles: a brick Federal-Greek Revival house, 17th century saltbox and Siasconset cottage.

The Nantucket poster harkens back to a time when the world moved to the tides' rise and fall. It's a wonderful gift for those who have felt the magical pull of Nantucket Island.

Nantucket poster: it's a whale of a panorama!

Want to get the kids interested in American history? Treat your family to a virtual heritage tour by displaying this richly detailed Nantucket poster in your home. Happy memories of summers on the island and a passion for its historic architecture inspired Marie Fox to paint Nantucket Island, an imaginative panorama of the past. She is careful to warn us that her print is not a road map. "I used a large dollop of artistic license in my portrayal. You'll get lost if you rely on it to find your way!"

If you do get lost, three handsome New England lighthouses will light your way in the Nantucket art print. For centuries, Great Point, Brant Point, and Sankaty Head lights have guided mariners past the island's sandy shoals. If you've visited Nantucket by ferry from Cape Cod, you'll recognize Brant Point Lighthouse. During Nantucket's whaling days, many a ship sailed out past it enroute to Cape Horn and the Pacific.

Also pictured is a one-room schoolhouse. Located in Polpis, it served the ‘scholars,' as students were called, who lived in the island's agricultural area. Central to country living long ago was the Old Mill, one of four that captured the wind to grind corn. Nearby is a really big wedding gift. It's the saltbox style house built in 1686 for Jethro Coffin and his bride. Want a reminder of your romantic weekend on Nantucket Island?
