1849 Voyage of the Brig Duxbury
Here’s a fascinating first-hand account of the Duxbury’s journey from Boston to San Francisco. Eager to reach California’s gold fields, a band of New Englanders chartered the Duxbury-built ship. To lighten spirits during the long and dangerous passage they sang these lyrics to the tune of Oh, Susanna: “Oh, Ship Duxbury, you are the ship for me, you are the greatest humbug that’s floating on the sea”. My connection with the Duxbury is romantic. Read about it at Meet The Artist: The Printmaker.
