On a bend in the road along Duxbury Bay stands this cozy Cape Cod, a style built in the area starting in 1700. Each May I was astonished by the lavender bounty of lilacs - some over a hundred years old - crowding its small yard. In 1987 I recreated this spring joy.
Mother gathers cut lilacs whose sweet fragrance will soon ornament her home. Father and son are off to see if the bluefish will bite, a younger boy eager to join them. The girls jump rope to the cadence of chanted rhymes. Are they singing sea chanties on the schooner in the distance where Gurnet Light winks?
Companion Folk Art Prints:
Consider displaying two primitive country prints together:
When Lilacs Bloom with
Catching Fireflies. The colors complement each other and both folk art scenes depict children at play outside. Pair night and day, summer and spring, and different styles of New England architecture: the grand and welcoming Federal house with the snug antique Cape Cod.
