This is my childhood bedroom in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Out the window you can see Clark’s Island which during summers we would sail to in our small red catboat. The island was named after the Mayflower mate, John Clarke. When the Pilgrim ship reached what was to be named Cape Cod, Clarke set off with others in a small boat called a ‘shallop’ to find a haven. They weathered a severe storm to put ashore on the small island just west of Saquish Head, safely inside Duxbury Bay.
Miles Standish, a former English soldier and leader of the Pilgrim settlers, had ancestors who came from Duxbury Hall in Chorley, Lancashire. The name Duxbury may have derived from the old Saxon: duc or duke meaning chieftain or leader and burh, burgh or bury meaning stronghold or fort.
