Historic Boston SALE: Price shown is 40% off
My Historic Boston print imagines a journey along the famous Freedom Trail around 1900. It is no literal road map of Boston but a love letter to this wonderful city 30 miles north of my childhood home. As a little girl I would enjoy rides in the swan boats of the Public Garden. In my print, I have returned to a child's sense of what a simpler Boston might have felt like when our country was also younger.
My imagined city gives off the same energy it has today, but its highest buildings are churches, red brick is everywhere its signature, horses and buggies travel the narrow streets, and sailing ships fill the harbor.
To prepare this visual time machine, I studied old engravings and books and photographs. I walked and sketched. Then I spent four months in a small studio on Beacon Hill re-creating the historical magic of our Revolutionary City in paint. As I pushed time back, I wanted to suggest without false sentimentality a leisurely innocence imbued with the virtues of family life and neighborliness. Mayor Menino welcomed my vision as did the thousands of visitors who have bought my print.
