Built in 1793, the thick walled house I grew up in invites me to imagine our family there in an earlier New England winter. Hopping from rug to rug across the cold floor, I gently rock the cradle and climb into my father’s lap. As I snuggle with my doll and my brother wiggles under the blanket, Father calls forth the magic of story with the words, “once upon a time.” Mother stitches what will one day be a needlepoint heirloom. Too soon my parents will carry us all upstairs by candlelight.
